In March 2026, Alvin Chen successfully defended his PhD thesis in the MANE Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research focused on developing interpretable and data-efficient anomaly detection methods for laser powder bed fusion metal additive manufacturing. By combining melt-pool monitoring, time-series modeling, and statistical detection, the research aimed to identify process faults with minimal training data and support more reliable metal AM production.
